FAYETTEVILLE — The University of Arkansas volleyball team opened its 2014 spring schedule Wednesday night with a five setter against Tulsa. The match was played in front of the Razorbacks’ home fans at Barnhill Arena. Among the bright spots were sophomore Monica Bollinger and freshman Savannah Voelzke who each tallied career-high figures at their respective positions. In her first-ever start wearing the libero jersey, Bollinger had 28 digs to anchor Arkansas’ defense behind the block. That number doubles her in-season best of 14 digs which she established during the 2013 season against New Mexico. The team’s starting lineup also featured Voelzke who responded with 14 kills against the Golden Hurricane. During the fall season, she set her career high at 11 kills against Mississippi State. Wednesday’s match also included the Razorback debuts of Sophie Bethke and Shelby Harper who both saw time on the court in the spring opener. The freshman duo is part of Arkansas’ 2014 recruiting class and joined the program in January after graduating early from their respective high schools. Head coach Robert Pulliza welcomes back 11 players from last year’s team that advanced to the 2013 NCAA Tournament including junior Meredith Hays who will be the team’s lone senior in 2014. Hays was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-America selection in her first season at Arkansas. The Razorbacks have two more matches on their spring schedule. Arkansas returns to the court April 24 to face Missouri State in a match that will be played at Barnhill Arena at 7 p.m. (CT). The team will close out its spring slate April 26 with its Red-White Match at 11 a.m., before the Razorback football team’s Spring Game. Admission is free to all fans during the spring season.
