Boyce Earns Win in Relief as Razorbacks Captur

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Charley Boyce came out of the bullpen to earn the win and the Arkansas bats came alive when they had to on Easter Sunday as the fifth-ranked Razorbacks beat 24th-ranked Mississippi State, 10-5.
A Baum Stadium crowd of 1,172 turned out to see the Hogs’ improve their record to 21-4 and even their mark in the SEC at 3-3.
“We talk about how the most important game to win is Sunday,” Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. Weather you are up two games to none or down 2-0; you have to win on Sunday. If you win on Sunday, it puts you in position to win championships.”
Boyce replaced starter Devin Collis who did not make it out of the first inning. The left-handed junior-college transfer faced just seven batters and allowed three runs on four hits and walked two in two-third of an inning.
The right-hander Boyce was dominant from his first pitch of the game. He retired the first batter he faced to end the first inning and cruised through four more, allowing just two hits and striking out a season-high five.
Clay Goodwin’s cracked his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right field, to get the Razorbacks on the scoreboard in the second inning and back in the game at 3-1.
Arkansas finally got bats going in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on two hits and an error, all with two outs. Craig Gentry delivered the big blow in the inning with a two-RBI single.
The Razorbacks put the game away in the fifth inning with four runs on five hits to take an 8-3 lead. Goodwin and Marquardt both doubled home runs in the inning and Brian Walker also drove in a run with a single.
Scott Bridges connected for his third home run of the season in the sixth inning to extend the Hogs’ lead to 10-3. The Bulldogs added single tallies in the seventh and ninth innings off Lee Land. Land pitched four innings to earn his first save of the season.
Casey Rowlett went hitless (0 for 4) for the first time this season, snapping his hitting streak at 22 games. Goodwin finished 2 for 3 on the day with two RBI and tied a career high with three runs scored.
The Razorbacks are off until Friday, April 1, when they travel to Auburn for a three-game series with the Tigers. Game times are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
