Bridges Steals Four Bases for Arkansas in 9-4

RUSTON, La. – Arkansas ran wild on the base paths Sunday afternoon as Scott Bridges tied a school record with four stolen bases and Blake Parker drove in four runs as the Razorbacks took the rubber game of the series against Louisiana Tech, 9-4, in front of 1,349 fans at J.C. Love Field.
The Hogs’ 10 stolen bases are the most under Head Coach Dave Van Horn and two off the team record set on Feb. 28, 1992, against Central Missouri. Scott Bridges improved his team-leading stolen base total to eight. Bridges four stolen bases marked the fifth time in school history a Razorback player has stolen four bases in a game. The last player to accomplish the feat was Scott Pose against Missouri on Feb. 13, 1988.
Parker went 3 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI to pace the Razorbacks 12-hit attack. Bridges went 2 for 5 with a double and a run scored.
“I knew we had stolen a lot of bases,” Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. “But I didn’t know we had stolen that many. I was glad to see Scott Bridges on base because when he is on, he is going to run.
“I have always said we are a team that is going to take advantage of other teams weakness. They were struggling to hold us on, and we took advantage of what they gave us.”
The Hogs’ starting pitcher James Gilbert (1-0) earned the win with five strong innings of work. He allowed three runs (all earned) on eight hits, while striking out one. Freshman Shaun Seibert pitched the final four innings of the game to earn his first career save. He allowed on run on one hit, while striking out five and walking one.
Parker got the Hogs off to the quick start that they needed with a three-run home run with two outs in the first inning. The sophomore lined a 2-2 offering from Louisiana Tech’s freshman Aaron Lorio over the left field wall. Parker was hitless in his last nine at prior to the home run.
Parker led the Razorbacks’ charge in their four-run third inning with a RBI double to left-center field. Arkansas pounded out five hits in the inning to take a 7-1 lead.
Louisiana Tech starter Aaron Lorio left the game prior to Parker’s double for reliever Andrew Alsup. Lorio pitched two-plus innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on five hits.
Ryan Rupert threw well in relief for Tech. He pitched 3.2 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out six and walking three.
Junior college transfer Craig Gentry left the game in the bottom of the first inning when slammed his head into the base of the right field making a circus catch for the first out of the game.
Jason Santiago doubled home a run in the bottom of the second inning to narrow the Arkansas lead to 3-1.
The Bulldogs plated their second run of the ball game on a RBI double off the bat of Gil Laird. Tech then pulled within four runs at 7-3 in the fifth inning on Travis Granberry’s RBI double. Scott Hode’s perfect rely throw to the plate after Granberry’s double cut Adam Cobb down at the plate for the third out of the inning.
The Razorbacks return home to open the home portion of the schedule with defending Big 10 Champion Minnesota at 2:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Baum Stadium. The three-game series continues on Saturday and Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
