FAYETTEVILLE – For the third time in as many weeks of competition for the University of Arkansas women’s cross country team, Stephanie Brown has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman Runner of the Week for her performance in a loaded field at the Notre Dame Invitational.
"Stephanie Brown, in spite of being ill, is a great competitor and we’re really pleased with what she’s been able to do for us," head coach Lance Harter said of the Downs, Ill., native’s effort last weekend.
As Arkansas’ third finisher, Brown navigated the 5K Notre Dame course in a time of 17:38. She was the eighth freshman to cross the line in the race of 194 participants and finished in 60th place overall. Brown has finished as the Razorbacks’ third runner in the team’s three races so far this season.
In a field that featured 16 teams either ranked or receiving votes in the national poll, Arkansas ran to a ninth-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational. Junior Kristen Gillespie (22nd overall, 17:08) paced Arkansas’ top-five lineup which also included, in order, Miranda Walker (33rd, 17:21), Brown, Cali George (74th, 17:46) and Natanya Luther (106th, 18:11).
After receiving votes in the first few polls of the year, the Razorbacks moved to No. 25 in the Oct. 5 release of the USTFCCCA national rankings following their performance at Notre Dame. Regionally, Arkansas moved to the top spot in the South Central Region rankings.
