Bubis Falls in First Round, Will Play in Conso
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas senior Aleksey Bubis fell in the first round of the 2002 Omni Hotels Indoor Championship on Thursday. Bubis fell to the fifth-seeded Alex Vlaski (No. 15) of Washington, 7-5, 6-3.
Bubis, the Hogs’ leading match player, fell to 10-6 on the season with the loss and 1-3 against ranked opponents. Head coach Robert Cox was, however, happy with Bubis’ performance.
“It was a very good match,” Cox said. “Aleksey handled the pressure and the situation well. He was playing the No. 5 seed and did well. He wasn’t intimidated. He walked out on the court to win the match.
“It was a very clean match. In the first set there was only one break point and Vlaski took advantage of it and broke Aleksey to go up 6-5. In the second, he broke Bubis at 3-2. This was a match where one shot here or there changes things. At this level of competition, one or two points can decide a match.”
Bubis’ fall isn’t over yet. He will move on to the consolation bracket with a chance to continue play in tomorrow’s second round.
