It’s hard to believe, but the season is finally here. Once the ball tips on Friday, everything counts. Hopefully, @RazorbackWBB worked out the jitters on Sunday in its 70-61 exhibition win over Missouri Southern and the team is ready to go come 11 AM.
We know the Razorbacks begin the year with Sam Houston State. But, what are the Bearkats all about? Well, to start, they were the Southland Conference co-regular season champions with Oral Roberts last year. Not surprisingly, SHSU advanced all the way to the Southland finals, where ORU earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
However, this year’s Bearkats will have a very different look to them. Sam Houston State’s top three scorers are gone, outta here. No Britni Martin, Sequeena Thomas, or Chanice Smith. The former two both averaged north of 14 points per game and the latter posted almost double figures. That’s 63-percent of the entire team’s production.
So where does SHSU turn? Just like the Hogs, the ‘Kats need to find answers. One certainty is senior guard Jasmine Johnson. She poured in almost eight points on average and will have to up the ante this season for Sam Houston State to have success.
Another name to watch is Angela Beadle. She’s the only player in the projected starting five taller than six feet. That could be an area that head coach Brenda Nichols looks to attack. Beadle will be matched up with Arkansas newcomer Jessica Jackson, so perhaps the Bearkats coaches play the experience vs. talent roulette there. Beadle’s also a more physical, traditional post; whereas, Jackson is athletic and more multidimensional.
It will be fun to watch how each team’s game plan unveils itself Friday morning. It’s Elementary School Day, so Bud Walton Arena is going to have a lot of energy. Join the kids and help Arkansas women’s basketball start the season on a positive note! Tipoff is set for 11 AM. Jeri Thorpe and I get the broadcast going at 10:45 with the pregame. Check HERE for where you can find us across the state.
Also, we’re trying something different this year. Throughout the broadcast, feel free to tweet me @arperlman&with any questions or comments. It can be anything from “How do you think Calli Berna is playing?” to “How many points do the Razorbacks have off turnovers?” This is your broadcast. We’re here to make sure you have the best listening experience possible. So, I hope you’ll contact us while you’re listening and make this thing yours.
The roller coaster is about to begin.
