It’s safe to say @RazorbackWBB’s season started off in style with an 81-45 win over Sam Houston State on Friday. But, perhaps even more significant than HOW many points Arkansas tallied is WHO recorded those points. Check the box score up and down. The top three scorers? All freshmen.
The fans (and plenty of elementary school students) were treated to a balanced attack, led by newcomers. Both Jessica Jackson and Kelsey Brooks had 17 points, and classmate McKenzie Adams added another 16. That’s 50 of the team’s 81 points in all.
Efficiency was the name of the game in the season opener. The Hogs shot 50-percent on the dot and were 11-for-17 from deep at one point before missing their last two. That’s a number we really didn’t see last year and it’s one that could win Arkansas plenty of games over the course of the season.
Calli Berna made her mark on the ballgame, as well. The junior dished out a career high 13 assists and she might have had a shot at Arkansas’ all-time single game record 18 dimes. She only had to play 28 minutes with the Hogs up big and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s her season low when it’s all said and done.
The last major takeaway from Friday morning was the Razorbacks consistency. At points last year, Arkansas went through major scoring droughts. That problem never presented itself against Sam Houston State. The Hogs scored throughout the game and never let the Bearkats believe they had a chance. After the opening tip, @RazorbackWBB went on a 14-4 run and never looked back.
So far, so good for women’s basketball. The nonconference continues Wednesday night when Arkansas welcomes Oral Roberts to Bud Walton Arena. I’ll have a complete preview of that matchup Wednesday at noon. Also, be on the lookout for my interview with head coach Tom Collen on ArkansasRazorbacks.com as we break down Sam Houston State and look forward to Oral Roberts.
