Any season is going to be full of highlights and struggles. Right now, @RazorbackWBB just so happens to be stuck with the latter. It’s not for lack of effort. Arkansas has been in close games throughout the SEC season. In fact, four of the five conference bouts have been decided by four points or less. The other? Just a seven-point defeat at Florida.
Ole Miss rolls into Bud Walton Arena this afternoon and it provides a great chance for the Hogs to record their second SEC win. The Rebels are still winless in conference and Arkansas is in desperate need of a solid performance at home.
How can the Razorbacks bounce back at the Bud? Here are a few keys to today’s matchup:
– Slow down Valencia McFarland. The Ole Miss point guard is the team’s battery, engine, and gas. The senior’s coming off of a career high 28 points against Vanderbilt on Thursday and also sets others up well. She’s averaging just over six assists a game — trailing only Arkansas’ Calli Berna in the SEC. That battle alone is worth the price of admission.
– Rebound the ball. Simple, but the Hogs have been outworked on the boards the last two games. That deficit isn’t significant on its own. However, the Hogs’ rebounding margin over the previous two contests has been -10. It’s very difficult to win basketball games when the opponent is cleaning up the glass that well. Luckily, Ole Miss is only +1 on the boards for the season.
– Play as a team. It would have been easy for the Razorbacks to fold down 16 points in the second half on the road, but they didn’t. The Hogs banded together to almost erase that enormous deficit. Head coach Tom Collen said Arkansas grew up on Thursday night. Now, it’s time to prove the Hogs can bring that cooperation back to Fayetteville.
FUN FACT FOR THE GAME:
As a child, it was difficult for me to spell the word “Mississippi.” How many “S”s do I use? How many “P”s? Now, I’ll never forget thanks to the song that clearly sets a rhythm for spelling the state’s name. That song was firstsang in 1917 by Frances White in the Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway.
