Campbell-Brown wins at Jamaican National Meet

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Alain Bailey and freshman Tarik Batchelor finished first and fourth, respectively, in the long jump and Veronica Campbell-Brown won the 200 meters at the Jamaican National Meet on Sunday.

Bailey won with a long jump of 26-11.25. His mark is a personal best, the fifth-best jump in school history and is the "A" standard for the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin in August.

Bailey was sitting in second place on the final round of jumps. Texas A&M’s Julian Reid held the lead with his mark of 26-9. On his final attempt, Nebraska’s Nicholas Gordon pushed Bailey to third with his jump of 26-7.25. Bailey popped his winning 26-11.25 and Reid was unable to answer back.

Batchelor is the Jamaican Junior National Champion in the long jump and finished fourth in the senior meet. His best jump of the day measured 25-9.25, also a personal best.

"Both Alain and Tarik competed well and that’s the important thing," Arkansas field events coach Dick Booth said. "Alain moved from second to first and won on his final jump. Both had personal bests and will likely get another chance to compete this summer. If the winner has the "A" standard, it’s almost a guarantee they will compete for Jamaica at the World Championships. You can’t ask for much more than that. I’m really proud of these guys."

Former Razorback NCAA Champion and school record holder, Campbell-Brown won the 200 meters in a time of 22.40. She holds the World Championships "A" standard and will travel to the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin. Her winning time on Sunday is currently No. 3 in the world.
