FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas Razorback men’s cross country and track and field head coach Chris Bucknam has announced the addition of a stellar middle distance runner for the 2010-11 season.
Bryan Cantero will join the Razorbacks this fall as a freshman member of the cross country and track and field teams. The Aix-les-Bains, France native specializes in the 800 meters and the 1,500 meters on the track.
On the track, he holds prep bests of 1:50.08 in the 800 meters and 3:41 in the 1,500 meters. He finished eighth at the 2009 European Cross Country Championships and 51st at the 2010 World Junior Cross Country Championships.
"Bryan Cantero has the potential to be one of the top middle distance runners in the NCAA," Bucknam said. "He has already shown his talents and abilities while running for his native France at various international competitions. Bryan will fit in perfectly with our group of middle distance runners that includes NCAA Champion and All-American Dorian Ulrey and SEC Champion and All-American Duncan Phillips, just to name a few. We are very excited for Bryan to join our team and the Razorback community."
In other recruiting news, recent addition Nathanael Franks, a Chancellor’s Scholar who will join the squad for the 2010-11 season, won the decathlon at the 2010 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships, on Wed., July 18.
Franks scored 6,905 points for the win. En route to his personal-best point total, he won the 400 meters and the shot put and picked up second-place finishes in the 1,500 meters, high jump, shot put and javelin within the decathlon competition. Franks’ point total of 6,905 ranks No. 3 among high school athletes during the 2010 outdoor season. Franks’ soon-to-be teammate Kevin Lazas holds the No. 2 point total in the nation in 2010 with his personal best of 7,510.
Cantero joins Neil Braddy (Fort Smith, Ark.; sprints), Auston Chen (Tampa, Florida; multi events), Sam Ewing (Glenwood, Ark.; pole vault), Nathanael Franks (Damascus, ore.; multi events), Dwayne Golbek (Claremore, Okla.; high jump), Walter Henderson (Edmond, Okla.; sprints), Noah Kittelson (Indianola, Iowa; high jump), Kevin Lazas (Brentwood, Tenn.; multi events) and Dey Tauch (Rend Lake College; distance) in Arkansas’ 2010-11 signing class.
