NORMAN,Okla. — Just three days away from making his 46th collegiate start, Arkansas men’s golf senior Sebastian Cappelen came in at No. 5 in the latest Palmer Cup ranking for Team Europe released on Wednesday. Wednesday’s update is the next-to-last ranking before the teams are announced on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive on April 17. The top six golfers in the ranking from both the United States and Europe will be among the 10 individuals selected to compete in the Palmer Cup held Walton Heath Golf Club. The event will be held from July 26-28, in Surrey, England. Cappelen is a three-time Palmer Cup participant for Team Europe, accumulating a 3-2-1 single record and 5-5-2 overall. Team Europe won the Palmer Cup in 2012.
Using Golfstat’s NCAA Player Ranking as a base — in which Cappelen is No. 20 — the Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a negative bonus for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
Heading into this weekend’s Aggie Invitational held at Traditions Club held in Bryan, Texas, Cappelen has been Arkansas’ low-man in three of four spring events and six times on the year while supplying a team-low 71.3 stroke average. Over his nine events as a senior, the Denmark native has eight top 20s, a quartet of top 10s, three top 5s and a win at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, marking the fourth straight year he’s won a tournament.
Cappelen’s 27 rounds so far this year have all contributed to the team score, a feat he’s accomplished in 123 of 132 rounds over his illustrious four-year career. The 2013 SEC Individual Champion has carded 14 under-par rounds helping him finish six events at even-par or lower, accumulating 93 birdies along the way.
Also included in Cappelen’s No. 5 ranking was an eighth place finish at the Western Refining Collegiate All-American Golf Classic and a tie for third place at the Patriot All-America, both of which were held during winter break.
