CARMEL, Ind. — Fueled by three players at under-par for the second straight round, including medalist Sebastian Cappelen, the No. 12 University of Arkansas men’s golf used a team score of four-under 284 to turn a six-stroke final round deficit into a five-stroke win at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate hosted by Indiana on Tuesday. The Razorbacks entered the day with momentum from Monday’s afternoon round where they posted a three-under 285, the lowest round by the 14-team field on the 36-hole opening day. Arkansas was able to top that score by one stroke on the par 72, 7290-yard Crooked Stick Golf Club layout, to leap past No. 8 Georgia, No. 15 Florida State and Purdue en route to its 18th team title under head coach Brad McMakin. The individual win is the fourth of Cappelen’s storied career, as he turned his first day two-stroke lead into a three-stroke win over Purdue’s Adam Schenk. Cappelen built off his 70(-2)-71(-1) opening day with a final round one-under 71, marking the fourth time in his career he’s carded three straight under-par rounds at a tournament and the 12th time he’s finished a 54-hole event under-par. “I’m really proud of the way Sebastian played through the whole tournament and I’m really happy for the team because they put together two great rounds,” said McMakin. “It’s very difficult to win a tournament and to do it after a disappointing first round takes a lot of composure. The final 36 holes were a complete team effort and performances like this are what we know these guys are capable of.” Seven of the 12 counting scores turned in by the Razorbacks over the three rounds were under-par, while the rest of the field produced a total of 10. Arkansas’ 285 in Monday’s afternoon round and Tuesday’s 284 were the only two under-par rounds turned in by a field that featured four teams in the recent Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll and two others receiving votes. Cappelen has now produced a win in each of his four seasons to go along with a victory at the Patriot All-America Invitational during the winter break of his junior year. On Tuesday, he was the last Razorback on the course, shooting a two-under 34 on the back to help give Arkansas the final push past Georgia and Purdue who were in contention. Cappelen led the field of 75 players with 16 birdies and tied for the lead in par 5 scoring (-5). Arkansas’ low score of the day came from sophomore Taylor Moore and junior Thomas Sorensen, who each carded two-under 70s. Moore equaled his seven birdies from Monday’s 36 holes with seven more on Tuesday to move up 16 spots on the leaderboard and finish tied for eighth. The top 10 is the second of the season for Moore who shot a three-round 74-77-70(-2)/221. After an uncharacteristic first round, Sorensen returned to the form that helped him finish in the top 10 at each his first two events. The Denmark native’s 71-70 finish gives him five under-par rounds out of nine played this year, while he just missed his third top 10 by tying for 12th place. Over the last two rounds, Sorensen was bogey-free on the course’s front nine at six-under. Redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford was even or under-par for most of the day before settling with a one-over 73 that pushed his name up 21 spots on the leaderboard and into a tie for 25th place. Crawford contributed a score all three rounds with an 81-74-73/228 scorecard. Senior Blake Biddle was the team’s low-man in Monday’s second round with a three-under 69 that finished as the second-best round turned in by the field. Biddle finished in a tie for 47th position. Arkansas will close out its fall season on Sunday, Oct. 20, when it opens play at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. The three-day event will be hosted by Texas Tech at Isleworth Golf & Country Club in Windermere, Fla. For more information on Arkansas men’s golf, follow the team on Twitter @RazorbackMGolf.
