Cappelen’s Run Ends at 111th Western Amateur Championship

ROLAND, Ark. – University of Arkansas senior-to-be Sebastian Cappelen’s run at the 111th Western Amateur Championship came to a heart-breaking end Sunday at The Alotian Club on the 18th hole and his 125th of the week as he fell to No. 3 seed Jordan Niebrugge in the semifinals.

Cappelen took his first lead of the match on the par 4, 15th hole, and after a great sand save on the 16th, he dropped the final two holes thanks to back-to-back birdies by Niebrugge. The week-long event started with 156 players, including 54 of the world’s top 100, and after 125 holes of combined stroke and match play, Cappelen finished in a tie for third.

After earning the No. 10 seed through stroke play on Tuesday-Friday, Cappelen advanced to Sunday’s semifinal with a pair of match play wins against No. 7 seed Robby Shelton IV and No. 2 seed Carlos Ortiz. Cappelen rallied to force extra holes and defeated Shelton IV with a birdie on the 20th hole and took care of Ortiz, 4 & 3, to advance to the semifinals. Cappelen was vying to become the second Razorback to win the Western Amateur in the last three years.

The 2013 Western Amateur Championship was a success for the Razorbacks, as four players made the initial 53-player cut while Cappelen and sophomore-to-be Taylor Moore advanced to the 16-player match play portion.
