LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Senior Sebastian Cappelen and junior Thomas Sorensen highlighted the 36-hole opening day at the Windon Memorial Classic for the No. 7 Arkansas men’s golf team, as the duo will enter Monday’s final round in the top five on the individual leaderboard. The Razorbacks are in sole possession of seventh place in 16-team tournament held at The Knollwood Club. Both Cappelen and Sorensen put together bogey-free rounds of three-under 69 on the day to lead Arkansas to a two-round 299-284(-4)/583. The team’s four-under 284 in the afternoon was the third-best round of the day by 16-team field and the lowest in the second round. No. 22 Kent State (283-286/569) holds a three-stroke lead over host Northwestern (282-290/572), while Coastal Carolina, UC Davis and Marquette are tied for third place, just three strokes ahead of the Razorbacks. Cappelen’s day began with the 100th counting score of his illustrious career, as he did so in style with the aforementioned three-under 69. One of six players to finish under-par in both rounds on the day, Cappelen followed his opening round 69 with a one-under 71 in the afternoon to sit in a three-way tie for second place. Just one stroke behind Chris O’Neil of Michigan, Cappelen’s day featured 28 pars, six birdies and just two bogeys. Seeing his first action of the season, Sorensen will enter Monday just two strokes off the lead after a 72(E)-69(-3)/141(-3) on a day that saw him play his final 20 holes without a bogey. Like Cappelen, Sorenson was never over-par at any point during either round, nearly posting identical numbers with 27 pars, six birdies and three bogeys. A native of Denmark, Sorensen is part of a four-way tie for fifth place in the 87-player field. “Sebastian and Thomas turned in terrific performances today when we really needed it,” said head coach Brad McMakin. “They gave us a lot of stability in the lineup and now we need others to join them. We started to put it together in the second round and we need to carry that momentum over into tomorrow.” Arkansas’ four-under 284 in the second round also featured a one-under 71 from sophomore Taylor Moore, who bounced back from an uncharacteristic opening round 80. Redshirt sophomore Kolton Crawford contributed the fourth counting score in the afternoon with a one-over 73. Moore and Crawford led the Razorbacks with seven birdies each. Monday’s final round will commence at 8 a.m. when Arkansas takes the first tee alongside North Texas and Purdue.
