Carbone clinches thriller against Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Senior Emily Carbone won the clinching singles match for the 30th-ranked Razorback women’s tennis team Sunday as they defeated No. 64 Ohio State, 4-3, in what was a marathon match and gave Arkansas its seventh win of the season. Carbone’s match at the top spot was won in straight sets, but it wasn’t until she gutted out two straight tiebreakers against Kara Cecil to win, 7-6(4), 7-6(6), and give Arkansas the big win.
“First of all, what an incredible match overall,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “I have to tip my hat to Ohio State, who put on an excellent weekend of tennis. Second, there’s not many more clutch ways to finish a 4-3 match than Emily (Carbone) did today, winning five straight points in a tiebreaker after being down 3-6 with a great OSU crowd all around her. It was a complete team effort all weekend and we played probably our two best matches of the spring which is exciting as we enter SEC play this week.”
For the second time this weekend, Arkansas had the upper hand in the three doubles matches. Junior Claudine Paulson and sophomore Laurie Gingras secured the first win with an 8-5 victory over Cecil and Kelsey Dieters for their sixth win of the year. However, OSU edged out senior Kate Lukomskaya and freshman Catherine Parenteau at court three to force the first team point down to court two.
Carbone and fellow senior Stephanie Roy were going for their second win of the weekend, but were locked in a tough match with Kelsey Haviland and Noelle Malley. The two teams traded games until they reached a 7-all tie. From there, Roy and Carbone buckled down and won two straight to win the match, 9-7, and give Arkansas the early lead. Roy and Carbone are now 11-8 on the year and 6-4 in dual play.
The Razorbacks had the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play and extended that lead to 2-0 as Paulson got back to her winning ways as she cruised to a straight set, 6-3, 6-0, win over the 123rd-ranked Fidan Manashirova. It was Paulson’s first win over a ranked opponent this season and the first for any Razorback this year as well.
Even with the two point lead, Ohio State showed they were not going to go down without a fight as they took the win at court four, but Parenteau had an amazing turn of events at court six as she lost her first set 6-0 to Tiffany Dittmer and then won the second set 6-0. After seeing both sets go to each extreme, it was only fitting that the third set would go to a tiebreaker. Parenteau won just enough points in the end to take the tiebreaker set 7-6(4) and give her team a 3-1 lead. It was a nice rebounding win for Parenteau, as she ended up on the losing side yesterday, but has now won 10 matches this season and is 7-3 in dual play.
The Hogs had a chance to win the match outright in two of the final three matches as they two were taken to third sets. However, the Buckeyes ended up winners at courts two and five to set up the exciting finale at court one. It was the fourth match clinching win of the season for Carbone as she has become Arkansas’ go to player at the No. 1 spot, where she has three wins at the top spot and six wins this spring.
Arkansas will continue on the road next weekend as they will open SEC play at Vanderbilt on Friday, March 2 and Kentucky on Sunday, March 4. Friday’s match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday’s match will start at 11 a.m.
