Carbone named to SEC Community Service Team
FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas senior women’s tennis player Emily Carbone was selected to the 2012 SEC Women’s Tennis Community Service Team the league office announced last week.
Carbone, a native of Lexington, Ky., is making the team for the third straight year for her services throughout the community in Northwest Arkansas.
Carbone’s main involvement came as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which helps create community service activities for students and also allows her to participate in each of those activities that the committee is involved in. Carbone has been part of the committee for the last two years and has also participated in the Leadership Academy since 2010.
Individually, Carbone was part of the Lift Up America program (Feeding Hunger in Northwest Arkansas), the Together WE CAN (SEC Canned Food Drive), Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Rockin’ with the Razorbacks, Christmas Shop with the Razorbacks at Toys-R-Us and various tennis clinics for kids.
Carbone was also involved in the Sweat Hawgs program which helps promote physical fitness in local elementary schools, as well as Book Hogs, which promotes the importance of reading to area students. At the end of the year, Carbone attended the Book Hogs end of the year pizza party with the kids.
Along with all of her activities off the court, Carbone had a very good final season as a Razorback spending the majority of her time at the No. 1 and No. 2 position in singles. This season, Carbone won 11 matches, seven in dual play. Four of her wins came at the top spot, while the other three were earned at the No. 2 position.
Carbone teamed up with fellow senior Stephanie Roy in doubles this year and came out as the squad’s best doubles team. The duo amassed 17 wins, which included five conference victories. Spending nearly all their time at the No. 2 spot for doubles, Roy and Carbone scored 11 wins at the spot and also had one victory against a nationally ranked team.
The Razorback women’s tennis team just completed its regular season and conference tournament and now will wait to see if it lands in the NCAA Tournament field as an at-large team. The tournament selections will be made on May 1 at 4:30 p.m. CST after the conclusion of the other conference tournaments.
