FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A pair of two-out hits propelled the Cardinal team to a series-tying 4-2 victory over the White team in game two of the Fall World Series Tuesday afternoon at Baum Stadium.
The Cardinal squad came out firing in the first inning and scored a pair of runs without the benefit of a hit. Blake Baxendale recorded an RBI on a groundout back to the pitcher to plate the first run of the game and a miscue in left field provided the second score.
After a pair of scoreless frames, Clark Eagan erased that two-run deficit with one swing. Joe Serrano led off the inning with a walk and Eagan followed with a two-run opposite field home run to left center to knot the score 2-2.
Andrew Benintendi would give the lead right back to the Cardinal team in the fifth inning with a two-out run-scoring double to the gap in left center, sending Krisjon Wilkerson to the plate and making it 3-2.
Bobby Wernes added to that lead in the seventh frame with some more two-out magic as he guided a seeing-eye single down the right field line to score Carson Shaddy and give the Cardinal team a 4-2 victory.
Parker Sanburn picked up the victory after tossing 5.0 innings and giving up just four hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out four. Jake Smith suffered the loss after surrendering one hit and two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Jacob Stone came on and recorded the final out of the eighth inning before slamming the door with a perfect ninth inning to seal the deal.
The Cardinal-White Fall World Series continues with game three Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. Game four is slated for Friday at 3 p.m., followed by an if necessary game Sunday at a time to be announced later.
