TULSA, Okla. – Zach Cates’ two-out, RBI double broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning as Oklahoma State earned a 6-5 win over Arkansas in game one of the Tulsa World Big Four Baseball Bash at Drillers Stadium.
The Cowboys (33-13) led the Razorbacks (21-25) 4-0 after five innings before UA took a 5-0 lead with five runs in the top of the sixth inning, three on Kyle Washburn’s fifth home run of the season and second in as many games.
OSU tied the game at 5-5 when Toby Rhodes drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth inning and took the lead for good on Cates’ double in the eighth.
UA’s Scott Crossett led off the top of the ninth with a pinch-hit single and moved to third base before Cowboy reliever Joe Weaver (5-0) struck out Brett Hagedorn to end the game. Weaver scattered three hits in 3 2/3 innings of scoreless work in relief of starter Nick McCurdy to earn the victory.
Scott Roehl (2-4), the second of four Razorback relievers, worked 1 1/3 innings and walked Ali Modami to lead off the eighth inning. Wyatt Stanfield pinch-ran for Modami and scored the winning run on Cates’ double off Hog reliever Jeremy Rankin.
Arkansas shortstop Jeff Fletcher had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, the longest of his career and the longest by a Razorback this season. Washburn’s homer extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games.
