Cragg Named SEC Male Track Athlete of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas sophomore Alistair Cragg earned Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Week honors for men’s track and field on Wednesday.
Cragg blitzed the field in the 5,000-meter run last weekend at the Iowa State Invitational. The Johannesburg, South Africa, product posted a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 13:45.51 to win the race by more than 10 seconds. Cragg’s split was the best collegiate time recorded in the 5,000 meters this season.
“Alistair has really done a nice job for us,” Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. “With the limited amount of time that he has been here, that makes it even more impressive. If anyone deserves to athlete of the week, Alistair does. He posted that time by leading the whole race. I hope there is some more good stuff to come.
“Alistair is an example of the guys we have on this team. He is leading by example and if we have guys like that we are going to have a good team.”
The sophomore also is automatically qualified for the national meet in the 3,000-meter run. His time of 7:56.40 is currently the nation’s third-best collegiate time in that event.
Cragg has competed in a total of three races this season, with two of them resulting in NCAA automatic qualifying times.
Arkansas will send a group of sprinters and a distance medley relay team to the Oklahoma Sooner Invitational this weekend in Norman, Okla. The full Razorback contingent will take the track the following weekend at the SEC Indoor Championships to be held at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.
