Cragg Named Trackshark Athlete of the Week
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After setting a new NCAA 3,000-meter record with a time of 7:38.59 at the Tyson Foods Invitational of Feb. 14, senior All-American Alistair Cragg was named Trackshark.com’s athlete of the week.
Cragg had established the collegiate record at the 2003 Boston Indoor Games with a 7:45.22, but lost it when Michigan’s Nick Willis clocked a time of 7:44.90, just two weeks ago on the same track in Boston, Mass. With a loaded field of professional runners Cragg was able to reclaim the record in front of a hometown crowd of 4,241 when he posted a blazing time of 7:38.59 for runner-up honors.
Besides breaking the collegiate record by six seconds Cragg’s performance also broke former Razorback great Frank O’Mara’s 13-year old Irish national record of 7:41.14. Cragg’s time was also the fourth fastest run in the world this year.
This week’s honor marked the second time the Johannesburg, South Africa native had been named Trackshark’s Athlete of the Week during his time at Arkansas and the first individual honor he has received since the indoor season began.
Cragg and the rest of the Razorbacks will enjoy this week off while they prepare for the Southeastern Conference Championships in Lexington, Ky. The league meet will be hosted by the University of Kentucky on Feb. 27-29.
