Davis consistent member of special teams

One of the most consistent positions on the Razorback football team over the past couple of years has been that of the punter, Jeremy Davis. Entering his fifth season as a member of the team, Davis is a force to reckon with on the special teams side of the football.

Although shy and humble off the field, the senior lets his skill and finesse speak for him on Saturdays. Coming off an inspiring season in 2007 that provided an average of 40.0 yards per punt, Davis has higher goals for the special teams unit for 2008.

“We just want to come out and be perfect,” Davis, who had six punts over 50 yards last season, says. “By limiting our mistakes, we feel it will give the team a better chance to win.”

Changing from a three-step to a two-step punting technique, taught by specials teams coordinator Kirk Botkin, gives Davis confidence heading into his final season as a Razorback.

“I believe changing the punting technique has helped me get the punt off a lot quicker and more precise,” Davis says.

Although punting at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium has been something very familiar to him recently, new roles on special teams are in store for Davis. He will take over kickoff duties for the first time in his collegiate career while also handling snaps on field goals and PATs.

“I haven’t kicked off in four years, but I have enjoyed the opportunity and feel very comfortable doing so,” Davis says. “I’m anxious to get the job done during the season.”

His game has not only been consistent on the football field, but also off the field as he defines a student-athlete. Davis was a member of the Southeastern Conference and Lon Farrell Academic Honor Rolls in 2006 and 2007, things he considers as large accomplishments in his career as a Razorback.

“Seeing my name on those honor rolls means a lot to me, because I figure I will need those academics later on in life and I take much pride in it,” Davis says.

He will complete his degree in kinesiology in December. Consistency through football and academics is something Davis is best known for among teammates, coaches and fans. His leadership and fortitude on and off the football field defines what a Razorback is all about.
