Den Toom Garners First Career SEC Player Of The Week Honor

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas sophomore Johan den Toom was named the Southeastern Conference’s Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the period of Jan. 13-20 conference officials announced on Wednesday.

den Toom collected his first career honor after going 4-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles over the course of Jan. 16-19. Playing in the No. 2 singles spot, den Toom defeated Oliver Snaider 6-2, 6-4 and Anderson Scarpa 6-4, 7-5 in a Razorback doubleheader win over Mercer on Friday. den Toom’s victory against Snaider clinched the Razorbacks’ first 6-1 match over the Bears.

On Sunday, the Rotterdam, Netherlands native battled through three sets to defeat Michael Riechmann 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 of No. 9 Texas in the No. 3 spot, one of only two wins in Arkansas’ 5-2 loss. In his final singles win of the holiday weekend, den Toom bettered Omaha’s John Ellis 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, den Toom paired with fellow sophomore Juan Marino to take down Arsav Mohanty and Arnav Mohanty (Mercer) 6-3 in the No. 3 position on Friday. Against Omaha, den Toom and junior William Albanese defeated John Ellis and James McManus 6-0 again in the No. 3 spot.

The Razorbacks will next hit the road to face Northwestern on Saturday at 10 a.m., CT and either Oklahoma or New Mexico on Sunday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Norman, Oklahoma.
