Divide & Conquer: Razorbacks Post Impressive Wins In Debut

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Divided up between the Little Rock Classic and William & Mary Tribe Invitational, the University of Arkansas women’s tennis team set out to conquer, as Yang Pang, Kimberley – Ann Surin and Shannon Hudson posted notable wins to begin the 2013 fall season on Friday.

Entering the season ranked No. 43 in the ITA singles rankings, Pang warranted the preseason hype by defeating the ITA’s sixth-ranked freshman/newcomer, Despoina Vogasari of Houston, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. Making noise of her own in Little Rock, Ark., was Surin, who upset No. 61 Samantha Adams of Texas Tech, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, for her biggest win as a Razorback.

Meanwhile in Williamsburg, Va., Hudson marked the beginning of her Razorback career in impressive fashion with a win over Harvard’s Monica Lin, 6-2, 6-2.

"Shannon’s singles debut was fantastic," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "She was extremely poised and executed her game plan extremely well. What a great Razorback debut."

Hudson and Sarah McLeanalso teamed up for doubles competition in Williamsburg, Va., falling to Harvard’s Amanda Lin and Monica Lin, 8-6. The Razorback pair bounced back in the consolation semifinals of the Katrin Guenther Doubles Flight, defeating Callie Craig and Sarah Pham of Utah, 8-6.

"There were so many positives out there today for us," Hegarty said. "The level of doubles increased as the day went on. Craig/Pham is one of the best doubles teams in the PAC-12, so this is a confidence builder for us."

Hudson and McLean advance to face June Lee and Hannah Morrill of Harvard at 9 a.m. Saturday in the consolation finals of the Katrin Guenther Doubles Flight.

McLean also faced off against No. 74 Danielle Collins of Virginia in singles play, losing, 6-3, 6-3. The junior faces USC’s Dominika Kanakova in the consolation semifinals of the Lauren Nikolaus Singles Flight.

Flavia Araujo and Brittany Huxley competed at the Little Rock Classic. Araujo fell to Allie Robbins of Ole Miss, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, while Houston’s Elena Kordalaimi defeated Huxley, 6-4, 6-2.

Both Hudson and McLean continue singles play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Competition also resumes for Razorbacks in Little Rock, Ark., on Saturday.
