Dominant Displays Highlight Final Day in Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team finished the Missouri State Fall Invitational in style, capturing two singles and one doubles championships Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.

The Razorbacks finished the tournament with a combined 14-4 record in singles and doubles play.

“No question it was a productive trip to Missouri,” assistant coach Luc Godin said. “Winning some main draw titles as well as a consolation title showed that the ladies can win from the front and also respond after a setback.”

Freshman standout Natsuho Arakawa continued her hot play, defeating Louisiana Tech’s Jazmin Britos 6-2, 7-5 to win the Flight 1 singles championship. Arakawa also teamed with sophomore Agne Cepelyte to beat Louisiana Tech’s Angela Lorenzo and Nadja Manjon 6-0 in the Flight 1 doubles semifinal, before dispatching Louisiana Tech’s Britos and Marta Sramkova 6-3 in the championship. Cepelyte also went on to win the Flight 1 singles consolation final with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Southeast Missouri State’s Kseniya Zonova.

Junior Peyton Jennings also garnered a singles championship as she earned a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 win over Missouri State’s Phoebe Boeschen in Flight 4. The duo of Jennings and senior co-captain Sasha Shkorupeieva was held off 7-6 (7) by Central Arkansas’ Marli Van Heerden and QiLi Ma in the Flight 2 doubles semifinal but responded with a 6-2 win over Southeast Missouri State’s Ana Canahuate-Torres and Joanne Hollings in the third-place match. Central Arkansas’ Ma defeated Shkorupeieva 6-0, 7-6 (3) in the Flight 2 singes third-place match.

Arkansas returns to action Nov. 4-6 at the Brown Classic in Providence, Rhode Island.
