Dorian Ulrey hits auto in the mile

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Dorian Ulrey punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships for Arkansas Razorback men’s track and field on day two of the Razorback Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

"It was a good weekend for Dorian," head coach Chris Bucknam said. "He was solid on Friday (in the distance medley relay) and came back to run a good race today. German (Fernandez of Oklahoma State) ran off Dorian and we saw two outstanding mile times."

Ulrey clocked an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:57.60 in the mile, good for a second-place finish. His time ranks second in the NCAA, first in the SEC and No. 8 on the Arkansas all-time list.

"I was hoping for a faster time but it’s still January so I’m pretty happy," Ulrey said. "I’m always shooting for a victory so I was a little disappointed with second place. It’s a PR and an auto mark so I can’t be too hard on myself. That’s a tough first mile of the season especially after running 2:54 on the distance medley relay last night. My psyche is good, my fitness is good and my strength is definitely there."

In the triple jump, the Razorbacks picked up two provisional qualifiers from Tarik Batchelor and Daniel Quinn. Batchelor tied for first with his jump of 52-6.5. Quinn improved his provisional mark to 51-3.5 with a fourth-place finish. They rank second and third, respectively, on the SEC list. Batchelor is third on the NCAA list and Quinn ranks sixth.

"I was pleased with our horizontal jumps this weekend," Bucknam said. "We had two 51-foot jumps and we keep improving each time out."

The 4×400 meter relay, comprised of three freshmen and a sophomore, turned in a second-place finish with a time of 3:11.18. The team of Ben Skidmore, Travis Nollsch, Chris Bilbrew and Jake Stephens finished behind mile-relay power Baylor.

Nkosinza Balumbu competed in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday. He clocked a prelim time of 8.28 and finished 12th. He improved to 8.11 in the finals to finish second. His time ranks seventh on the Arkansas all-time list and 11th on the SEC list.
