Dual meet for men's track in Austin

FAYETTEVILLE – No. 18 Arkansas Razorback men’s track and field will continue the 2010 outdoor season with the Arkansas vs. Texas dual meet, Sat., April 17, at Mike A. Myers Stadium, in Austin, Texas.

The Razorbacks topped the Longhorns in an indoor dual meet, 88-81, at the Randal Tyson Track Center in January. The Razorbacks picked up eight individual wins and a title in the distance medley relay.

In the current USTFCCCA ranking, the Razorbacks are listed at No. 18. Arkansas is one of eight SEC schools in the top 25. Florida is No. 1, LSU is No. 8, Auburn is No. 10, Mississippi State is No. 11, South Carolina is No. 12, Ole Miss is No. 17 and Tennessee is No. 23. Freshman Eric Fernandez is the SEC leader at 10,000 meters. His time of 28:37.77 is the fastest by a freshman this season and ranks No. 3 in the NCAA.

Freshman Caleb Cross earned weekly accolades from the SEC on Tuesday. Cross, the SEC Freshman of the Week, competed in the 110-meter hurdles and as a member of the 4×400-meter relay at the John McDonnell Invitational. In the 110-meter hurdles, he clocked a prelim time of 14.03 and a final time of 14.21. His prelim time of 14.03 is a personal best, ranks No. 21 in the NCAA (No. 1 among freshmen) and No. 4 in the SEC (No. 1 among freshmen).

He also ran the third leg of the 4×400-meter relay with a 47.31 split, Arkansas’ fastest of the day. The quartet finished second with a season-best time of 3:10.71. The time ranks No. 9 in the SEC.

In January, the Razorbacks topped the Longhorns in an indoor dual meet, 88-81, at the Randal Tyson Track Center. The Razorbacks picked up eight individual wins and a title in the distance medley relay. Arkansas swept the running events from 200 meters to the 5K and added a DMR win at the end. In the field events, Brede Raa Ellingsen won the high jump with a clearance of 6-10.75 and Tarik Batchelor won the triple jump with a leap of 49-8.5.

Arkansas also picked up important runner-up finishes from freshman Scott Gillespie in the mile (4:09.42), junior Patrick Russell in the 3,000 meters (8:14.34), freshman Solomon Haile in the 5,000 meters (14:31.98), Cross in the 60-meter hurdles (8.05), senior Alain Bailey in the high jump (6-8.75) and sophomore Tarik Batchelor in the long jump (25-2.75).
