Eight more wins for women’s tennis

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 22 Razorback women’s tennis team got eight more wins on Monday as the final day of the Virginia Winter Invite concluded. Out of those eight wins, six came in singles play alone and all the winning matches were decided in straight sets. In all their matches today, the Razorbacks competed against the No. 40 ranked University of Utah, with the exception of freshman Jade Frampton, who faced a player from Virginia.

“I am pleased with the way we bounced back today,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “To finish eight up and two down on the third day is a credit to the team who really bore down and battled extremely well. Now we just need to turn our attention to a good North Texas team this Saturday.”

After going winless in doubles play the previous day, the Razorbacks got a convincing victory from the No. 35 team of junior Kate Lukomskaya and sophomore Kelsey Sundaram, who defeated No. 49 Anastasia Putilina and Paige Miles, 8-3, as well as Frampton and sophomore Valentina Starkova, who won their match 8-2 over Lucia Kovarcikova and Lexi Provancha. The win for Lukomskaya and Sundaram was their first of the spring.

Sophomore Claudine Paulson continued her fast start to the spring in singles play as she won her third straight match, this time over Miles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Paulson is now 3-0 on the season. Also, junior Emily Carbone won her first singles match of the spring over Kovarcikova, also in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Hogs had another first for the spring soon after as Lukomskaya finally got one for the win column in singles, defeating Missy Harris, 6-2, 6-2.

With Monday as the final day of play, the Razorbacks recorded at least one victory for each singles player and doubles team that competed in the three-day event. Overall, the team compiled a 12-9 record in singles play and a 4-5 record in doubles.

The Hogs will have a fairly quick turnaround for their dual-match opener against North Texas on Saturday, Jan. 22. That match will be played at the Billingsley Tennis Center with first serve scheduled for noon. For all information regarding the women’s tennis team, log on to ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
