FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Longtime voice of the Arkansas Travelers, Phil Elson will join the Razorback Sports Network from IMG as the new play-by-play voice of University of Arkansas baseball and women’s basketball.
The 2009 Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year, Elson has 17 years professional baseball broadcasting experience including spending the past 14 seasons as the Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the Arkansas Travelers, the AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. Prior to joining the Travs, Elson called games for the Helena Brewers, Ogden Raptors and Mudville Nine. Elson has also served as a fill in replacement on Razorback Baseball broadcasts in the 2011-13 seasons.
Elson has also been the play-by announcer for Henderson State football since 2011. Previously, Elson served nine seasons as the play-by-play broadcaster for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) women’s basketball broadcasts. He has also been a fill in host and play-by-play announcer for KABZ 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock.
“We are pleased to welcome one of the region’s top broadcasters to our Razorback Sports Network team,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. “Over the past 14 years, Phil has become a familiar voice to Arkansans including his work as a play-by-play announcer for a variety of baseball, basketball and football broadcasts. His wealth of broadcasting experience and sports knowledge combined with his familiarity with our state and the Razorback program made him an outstanding choice to help bring all the action of baseball and women’s basketball to Razorback fans throughout the state.”
“I am honored to be chosen to represent the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Razorbacks Sports Network as the radio voice for two sports that I have great passion for,” Elson said. “Broadcasting state wide for the fantastic, fervent Razorbacks fan base just adds to my excitement. Thanks to Jeff Long and his staff, as well as all the people at IMG College, for putting their trust in me to deliver honest, exciting and entertaining broadcasts that bring these Razorback teams and their fans even closer together. Thanks also to the Arkansas Travelers for bringing me to the Natural State in 2001, and for all the great years and memories!”
Elson will make his debut on Nov. 9, when the Razorback women’s basketball team opens the season with an exhibition game against Northeastern State. The Razorback women’s basketball team has several ticket options available for the 2014-15 season including both reserved and general admission packages along with courtside seating.
Arkansas opens the 2015 baseball season, Feb. 13-15, when it hosts North Dakota at Baum Stadium.
