FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas’ soccer team gets its season underway with Saturday’s 7 p.m. exhibition game at Saint Louis.
Head coach Erin Aubry’s roster consists of 11 seniors and 13 first-year student-athletes, and she’s ready to see the Razorbacks in game action.
"We’re ready to play somebody other than ourselves," she says. "That’s always fun. There are always challenges when you go on the road. It will be interesting to see how the team rises to those challenges. It may take a while for us to get organized, but we’ve made progress every session. We really need to get some experience."
Aubry’s first club last year also made progress. Arkansas set school records with 10 shutouts, four Southeastern Conference shutouts and a 0.80 goals against average.
Arkansas was 8-7-4 after going 11-8-0 in 2008, giving the Razorbacks consecutive winning seasons for the first time in program history.
Eight starters and 14 letterwinners are back from last year. Top returnees include forward Allie Chandler, an SEC All-Freshman selection; goalkeeper Britni Williams, Arkansas’ all-time leader with 22 shutouts; senior midfielder Kelly O’Connor, one of only three Razorbacks to start all 19 games a year ago; senior forward Laurel Pastor, who ranked seventh in the SEC in shots; and junior defender Kailey Anders, who earned Player of the Week honors from both the SEC and Soccer America last season.
Other returning starters are midfielders Kelsey Allison and Beth McVean, and defender Lauren Hallauer.
Saint Louis was 8-9-4 a year ago and 4-4-3 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
