Spring Break Tennis: The Lady’Backs travel to the Lone Star State during the University’s Spring Break to compete against two old rivals from the now extinct Southwest Conference. Arkansas begins in Waco, Texas against the No. 11 Baylor Bears on Mar. 18 at 1:00 p.m., then travels to Dallas the next day for a high noon match against Southern Methodist.
More on Baylor: The Bears are currently 11-2 after a 5-2 win on Saturday, Mar. 11 over the Missouri Tigers. The reigning Big 12 champs are currently 4-0 in conference play, and lead by the reining ITA singles individual champion Zusana Zemenova. The Lady’Backs have not faced the Bears since the 2001-02 season, but are 14-4 against Baylor all-time.
More on Southern Methodist: SMU’s 8-6 record is highlighted by a 4-3 win over Tulsa at home on Feb. 9. The Mustangs most recent win came over St. Mary’s in San Diego on Mar. 12, 4-1, in a victory capped by SMU ace Svetlana Kouzmenko’s 6-2, 6-1 win over St. Mary’s Aude Lambert. All-time against the Mustangs, the Lady’Backs are 8-11. But in last year’s bout in Fayetteville between the two teams, Arkansas stunned SMU with a 7-0 sweep.
Donde esta Texas?: It has been a while since the Lady’Backs have traveled to the Lone Star State for tennis competition. During the 2004-05 season, Arkansas faced three Texas schools, North Texas, Abilene Christian and SMU, but all three matches were played in Fayetteville. The last time Arkansas played in Texas was during the 2001-02 season at Rice. The Lady’Backs won the match 5-2. Arkansas played at SMU earlier that same season, but has not played at Baylor since the 2000-01 season.
