FRANKLIN, TENN. – University of Arkansas junior Maria Fassi fired a 7-under 65 leading the No. 15 Razorbacks to a 15-under 273 and first place after round one action at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tennessee, on Friday.

Fassi leads the field at the Vanderbilt Legends Course after shooting 4-under on the back nine where she started her day and 3-under on the front side.

The Hidalgo, Mexico, native opened with par scores on Nos. 10 and 11 and bogeyed No. 12. She rallied with back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14 but moved back to even par with a bogey on the 15th hole. She finished the side going birdie, birdie, eagle at the turn.

Fassi was solid to start the front side of the course with four consecutive par holes. She added three more birdies in the final four holes to hold the lead after the first day of play. Fassi’s round of 65 ties for the second-best single round score in program history and is her personal best as a Razorback.

From Shauna Taylor
“Obviously I’m really proud of the team’s effort today. Maria (Fassi) had seven birdies and an eagle and birdied the final hole. It was outstanding golf by Maria and Alana (Uriell) as well but it was a total team effort. First round puts you in position and we have a chance to go out and execute our game plan. I’m proud of our start and we looked really sharp as a team. I’m looking forward to a great opportunity tomorrow.”

Up Next
Play continues as the Mason Rudolph Championship Saturday and Sunday. The Razorbacks continue the fall at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. This year’s invitation-only event moves from Florida to Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Olympic Hills Golf Club. The ANNIKA is the second of four fall events for the Razorbacks and Maria Fassi is the defending champion. Fassi paced the Razorbacks to a runner-up finish a year ago.
