FAYETTEVILLE – Eric Fernandez, a member of the University of Arkansas men’s cross country team, will represent the Razorbacks at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championship with an individual at-large selection as announced Sunday evening. Fernandez is one of 38 individuals to receive an at-large bid invitation into the national meet based on performances at their respective regional meets last weekend.
Fernandez was Arkansas’ top runner Saturday at the NCAA South Central Regional meet in Waco, Texas. The Razorback junior was the regional runner-up with a 10K time of 30:18. Fernandez was one of five runners from the South Central region to advance to the national meet. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 of their respective region.
During the Razorbacks’ five-race season, Fernandez was the team’s top finisher at each competition. He led Arkansas to the program’s 19th Southeastern Conference team crown with a run to the individual conference title. Fernandez went on to be named the 2011 SEC Runner of the Year. The Ballwin, Mo., native has a season-best 10K time of 29:29.6 which he ran in October at the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville.
The 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championship, hosted by Indiana State University, will be run Nov. 21 at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The men’s 10K race at the national meet is scheduled for an 11:08 a.m. (CT) start.
