FAYETTEVILLE – The No. 16 University of Arkansas men’s cross country team finished in fifth place Saturday morning at the 75th Annual Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. The Razorbacks were paced by an eighth-place individual run by junior Eric Fernandez in the 8,000-meter race. Arkansas finished Saturday’s race with 135 team points.
"I thought we ran pretty well today," head coach Chris Bucknam said. "It was a solid team run for our first big meet of the season after having the long lay-off since our season opener back at the beginning of September."
Four of Arkansas’ top-five scorers placed inside the top 33 of the race with all five of the team’s scoring lineup finishing within the top 40. Host and top-ranked Oklahoma State won the meet while No. 6 Indiana ran to a runner-up finish.
Fernandez was the Razorbacks’ top finisher with an 8K time of 24:13.80. Through the first two meets of the season for Arkansas, Fernandez has been the team’s top finisher in each race.Senior Duncan Phillips was the second Razorback to cross the finish line. He posted a personal-best 8K time of 24:41.39, good for a 23rd-place result.
Arkansas’ third and fourth finishers were junior Cameron Efurd and senior Rick Elliott, respectively. The two teammates were separated by just over a second with Efurd in 32nd place at 24:50.72 and Elliott finishing in 33rd place in a time of 24:51.75. Junior Aaron Hamilton rounded out the Razorbacks’ scoring with a time of 24:58.70, good for 40th place overall.
Other team finishers for Arkansas were Chuol Dey (25:04.58) in 47th place, Patrick Rono (25:05.80) in 49th place, Layne Nixon (25:08.38) in 54th place, Thomas Cattin-Masson (25:26.19) in 73rd overall and Omar Abdi (26:32.77) in 149th overall.
