Final Gymnastics Intersquad of 2007 a success

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas gymnastics team closed the 2007 preseason with a successful intersquad meet Friday before breaking for the holiday.

The Gym’Backs moved into their competition venue at Barnhill Arena and the coaches scored the meet adding an element of urgency to the final practice.

The Gym’Backs responded with several good scores. Senior Samantha Cortez won two events capturing the all-around and vault titles.

Cortez, one of two seniors this season, posted a 9.875 on the vault leading to a 49.10 team score. She won the all-around title with a 39.325.

Fellow senior Emily Peacock won the bars title with a 9.875 while junior Alexandra LaChance posted a meet best 9.875 on the floor. Sophomore Casey Jo Magee scored a 9.875 to win the beam title.

Arkansas competed the intersquad beginning on the floor just as the team finished the 2006 season at Michigan at the NCAA Regional meet. The Gym’Backs rotated from floor, to vault, to bars and finished on the vault.

The Gym’Backs return after the break beginning the 2008 season on the road at Michigan facing the Wolverines and West Virginia Jan. 11. Arkansas opens at home hosting Southeastern Conference rival LSU Jan. 18, followed by a home meet with Penn State Jan. 25.
