TULSA, Okla. – Arkansas’ tennis team is off to a good start at the Wilson/ITA Region V Championships at the University of Tulsa with five of six Razorbacks winning their opening match in the main draw. Junior Adrians Zguns, ranked No. 9 in the country, joined Matt Roberts, Rohan Gajjar, Matt Simpson and Andrei Nicoara in advancing from the round of 64 to the round of 32. Zguns beat James Wilson of Saint Louis, 6-0, 6-1. Roberts improved to 11-1 this fall with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tyrone Hill of Oral Roberts. Gajjar beat Carlo Contente of Wichita State, 6-2, 6-2, to improve to 5-2; Nicoara topped James Clow of Nebraska, 6-2, 7-5, and is now 5-3; and Simpson outlasted Goran Vujakija of Wichita State, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, to also go to 4-2. UA’s only loss in the main draw was a 6-2, 6-3 setback suffered by Imraan Ismail to Tulsa’s Frederico Soriano. In the qualifying round, freshman Michael Jung won his first match with an 8-2 pro-set victory over Karlis Miljens of Arkansas-Little Rock. Jung lost in the next round, 6-4, 2-6 (10-5), to Nenad Curcic of Southwest Missouri State. Talley Parker also fell, 6-3, 6-3, to Weisel Kemp of ORU. Parker teams with Nicoara in doubles competition as they take on Alfredo Lagarda and Algan Renard of Illinois State. The Hogs’ team of Roberts and Ismail, who are seeded No. 7 in the doubles draw and are 3-1 for the year, play Dalibor Pavic and Chris Lueth from Drake University. The No. 5 seeded doubles combo of Gajjar and Simpson takes on Richard Gonzalez and Tom McCarthy of Creighton. Both doubles and singles continue through the weekend at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center with the finals scheduled for Monday.
