FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas football team held practice Wednesday, and defensive coordinator Chris Ash met with the media after practice to discuss preparation for Saturday’s game against No. 10 Texas A&M in Fayetteville. Coach Ash opened about practice this week.&
"Every week as we move forward through this process of the season our preparation has been better and better every week," Coach Ash said. "That’s a great credit to the players and where we’re going with the program.”
Coach Ash discussed the defensive philosophy in containing quarterback Johnny Manziel.
“Our strength is going to be in numbers, our fundamentals, how we’ve come to balance and keep our cleats in the ground, keep this guy in front of us," Coach Ash said. "It’s very important. You can’t be selfish and think one guy is going to get a big hit and knock him out because it’s not going to happen. It hasn’t happened in the 15, 16 games they’ve played in the past year and a half."
Coach Ash also discussed containing Texas A&M’s offensive line at the start of the game.
“We’ve got to get lined up," Coach Ash said. "We’ve got to make some plays. They’ve done a good job with their opening chances as an offensive staff of getting things going right out of the gate. We’re going to have to make sure we keep them off-rhythm and get behind the sticks a little bit on first down. We’ve got to do a good job of winning first downs, second-and-longs and third-and-longs."
Kickoff for Saturday’s sold-out SEC opener against Texas A&M inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
