RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Former University of Arkansas women’s golfer Stacy Lewis leads the field at the 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., after first round action.
Lewis, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, competed for the Razorbacks from 2005-08 and was a three-time All-American.
She turned professional and earned her LPGA Tour Card after graduation and has played well for the past three seasons.
This week, Lewis carded a first-round six-under 66 and is tied with Brittany Linicome for the lead. Lewis and Linicome lead by one shot over Sandra Gal and Mika Miyazato, who both shot 5-under 67 in the opening round of the year’s first major. Lincicome tallied six birdies in her round while Lewis birdied seven holes and recorded one bogey. Lewis’ best finish in a major came in 2008 when she tied for third at the U.S. Women’s Open.
"Yeah, it was playing really hard, so I knew I just needed to hit some good golf shots and get some putts to fall," Lewis said after her round. "That’s what happened. I just judged the numbers really well going into the green and just kind of hung in there and made par when I needed to."
Play continues through April 3.
