FAYETTEVILLE – In a matchup featuring three former University of Arkansas volleyball student-athletes, Criollas de Caguas will play Leonas de Ponce in the championship series of the Puerto Rico Superior League. Raymariely Santos and Janeliss Torres-Lopez play for Ponce while Ashley Vazquez is a member of Caguas. The league title will be decided in a best-of-seven series which begins Thursday at 7 p.m. (CT).
To reach the finals, Caguas posted a four-match sweep of Carolina in the semifinals and Ponce defeated Mayaguez in five matches. Following the league’s regular season, Torres-Lopez was named the LVSF Rookie of the Year in her first full season at the professional level. She signed with Ponce following her senior season in 2012. Santos and Vazquez each joined the league this past January.
Regardless of the series outcome, a former Razorback will claim a championship title for the second time in two months. In early April, Amanda Anderson helped lead Brondby win a league title in Denmark in her first season. Over the past two years, the Razorbacks have seen seven former players extend their careers by signing with a professional team.
