Former Tennis Hog wins two titles in Mexico

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Former Razorback netter Matt Roberts was a double winner Sunday at the Mexico F11 ITF Futures event in Coahuila, Mexico. Roberts took home the singles and doubles crowns for the fourth and fifth titles of his professional career. The wins mark the fourth doubles triumph and first singles victory.The tournament’s fifth seed in the singles draw, Roberts had to defeat an opponent he is very familiar with in the finals—former Razorback teammate Adrian Zguns. Roberts won the match, 6-3, 7-6(4) and claimed the title dropping just one set in five matches. En route to the title, Roberts defeated two seeded opponents, including the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Marcin Gawron, in the quarterfinals.Zguns, playing in just his third professional event, advanced to the championship match as a qualifier. In doubles play, Roberts teamed with Antonio Ruiz-Rosales as the tournament’s third seed. In the finals, Roberts and Ruiz-Rosales knocked off the second-seeded team of Juan Manuel Elizondo and Cesar Ramirez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. This is the second title for Roberts and Ruiz-Rosales as a team.

During his career at Arkansas, Roberts was a two-time All-SEC performer. In his senior season, the Little Rock native won a career-high 28 matches while helping lead the Razorbacks to the regional finals in 2006. The 28-win season represents a tie for the seventh-highest win total in a year by a Razorback. Roberts also tallied 26 victories during the 2005 season.
