FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.-The University of Arkansas men’s golf team made their second tournament appearance of the spring on Friday, shooting an 8-over 296, tying for seventh place at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Florida.  Although it was a disappointing first round of golf for the Razorbacks, the team is only eight strokes (or four water hazards) from the lead.

The tournament, played at the par 72 Golden Eagle Country Club, has a field of 12 teams including No. 22 ranked host Florida State, who ended the first round tied for fourth place.

Ole Miss was tied with the Razorbacks at the turn at 2-over, but was able to drop two strokes by the end, topping the tightly clustered leaderboard at an even par 288.  Just a stroke off, Virginia was in second, followed by Vanderbilt a stroke behind that.

Razorbacks Jason Cuthbertson and David Lingmerth turned in scores of 1-over 73s to tie for 15th place.  A stroke behind, Andrew Landry ended the day tied for 20th place.  Dropping down to a tie at No. 37, will Osborne carded a 4-over 76.  Freshman golfer Ethan Tracy placed 62 at 11-over.

“Both Landry and Osborne went in the water twice, mistakes that I have not seen in two years, but the positive was they were playing well enough earlier that it did not destroy us like it could have, ” head coach Brad McMakin said.

Playing the hard nine well, the Hogs found the last nine to be challenging, racking up eight bogies and four doubles.  Luckily, it was offset by six birdies before the Hogs stowed their clubs for the evening. As a team, the Hogs were able to hit every fairway on the first 18 but one.

“Mentally, we weren’t all there, but in most tournaments there is one bad round.  It is expected, but what we are trying to eliminate that as much as possible,” McMakin said, adding, “It is actually a good course for us. It is filled with dogleg left holes and well, we are a hooking team.”

The team will tee off again on Saturday, first addressing the side that gave them the most difficulty in round one.  “We hope to get a groove started early, and make some plays,” a hopeful McMakin said.
