George Wins Gold at European Junior Championships

ESKILTUNA, Sweden – Arkansas freshman Alex George edged out Simon Debognies of Germany to win the 5,000-meter run at the 2015 European Junior Championships in a time of 14:34.42.

George qualified for the meet by finishing first at the England Athletics U20 Championships which took place on June 20 in Bedford, England. The SEC cross country freshman of the year crossed the line first in a time of 14:18.8 granting him the honor to represent Great Britain at European Junior meet.

The Gloucester native ran with the front pack for the entire race coming through the 3,000-meter mark at 9:03.38. As the top five separated themselves from the rest of the field, George took his opportunity to increase the pace moving into the lead position with 400 meters to go. Passed by two competitors on the outside on the backstretch George used the momentum off the final turn to regain the lead out-kicking Debognies by .25 seconds to claim the victory.

George will return as a sophomore in the fall for Razorback cross country.
