George, Campbell-Brown advance at Olympics
FAYETTEVILLE — With victories in their first-round races Friday, Regina George and Veronica Campbell-Brown advanced to the semifinal round of their respective events at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. George finished as the 10th-overall qualifier in the 400 meters securing a spot in the next round, while Campbell-Brown had the third-fastest time during the first round of the 100 meters. In her Olympic debut, George ran to a time of 51.24 to win heat seven of the 400 meters. By finishing first in her heat, she clinched an automatic berth into the semifinal round. The semifinal round of the 400 meters is set for Saturday at 2:05 p.m. (CT). George, representing Nigeria, has a season-best and school-record time of 51.11. Campbell-Brown cruised through her first-round race at 100 meters in a time of 10.94 to win heat three. She was one of six runners in the first round to cross the finish line under 11 seconds. Campbell-Brown won a bronze medal at 100 meters at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Both the semifinal and final will be run Saturday with the first race scheduled for 1:35 p.m. (CT). The final will be run at 3:55 p.m. Also competing in the first round of the 100 meters, former Razorback Kerri-Ann Mitchell finished sixth in heat one and 41st overall with a time of 11.49. She did not advance to the next round. Mitchell qualified for the Olympics with a third-place finish at Canada’s Olympic Trials in June. In addition to George and Campbell-Brown, day two of track and field competition will include Tina Sutej in the qualifying round of the pole vault. That event is scheduled to begin at 4:20 a.m. (CT).
