University of Arkansas juniors Aubrey Golbek and Lizzy Witbeck were named captains for the 2013-14 swimming and diving team, head coach Sean Schimmel announced on Thursday.“It is a real honor for Aubrey and Lizzy to be elected captains by their peers,” Schimmel said. “They both havenatural leadership skills and both have been a part our Leadership Academy through the department. I think both of these things wereinvaluable in continuing to develop their skills to make them better more effective leaders. Everyone knows how critical their roles will be in the team’s experience next season. Leadership from not only Aubrey and Lizzy but from the entire team will help us continue to build our championship culture as we move Arkansas swimming and diving into the future.”During the 2012-13 season, Golbek competed in six different events for the Razorbacks, notching six new career highs this season. “I’m really honored to be chosen to lead this group of amazing women,” Golbek said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to serve each member of the team and hopefully help them and this team reach our goals.”Golbek and Whitbeck both have shown to be leaders outside of the pool as well as both named to the SEC Honor Roll for the fall semester. Currently, Whitbeck is the secretary of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and also served as the Hogspy Committee Chair. Whitbeck competed in five different events for the Razorbacks this season. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to lead such a great group of ladies next year,” Whibeck said. “What I am most looking forward to is having fun and growing together as a team.”The swimming and diving team concluded the 2012-13 season in high fashion, putting together the seventh-best finish (26th) in program history at the NCAA Championship, which marks the best finish since 1990. The Razorbacks also finished the season with a 10-1 dual meet record, tying the 2008-09 record for the best in school history.
