FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Following its second victory in as many tournaments, the University of Arkansas men’s golf team is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the first Golfstat.com rankings which were released on Wednesday. The Razorbacks picked up victories at the Gopher Invitational and against a very good field at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and have a rating of 92.236% in the Golfstat ranking. Golfstat takes into account numerous statistical data and ranks teams based on potential head-to-head competition. “It feels great to be ranked No. 1, but the year just got started,” Arkansas head coach Brad McMakin said. “There are several west coast teams that have yet to play and the national championship isn’t until late May. We played well in a couple of tournaments so far, but need to continue to work hard and get better.” It is believed that Arkansas’ No. 1 ranking is its first since October of 1997 when the Razorbacks were tabbed No. 1 in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. In other rankings, the latest Golf World/ Nike Golf Coaches’ Poll has Arkansas moving up one spot to No. 9. The Razorbacks return to competition on Oct. 10, when they compete at The Jack Nicklaus in Columbus, Ohio. Arkansas finished fourth at the event a year ago and expects another loaded field at the two-day event this fall.
