Great play equals great results in Virginia

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – An 11-1 overall record after day one of the William & Mary Tribe Invitational puts the University of Arkansas Razorback women’s tennis team in prime position for a run on Saturday.

“Today was another solid step forward for the team today,” said Arkansas head coach Michael Hegarty. “We played some excellent September doubles and were a super tie-breaker away from a 12-0 day overall, so today was almost perfect."

In doubles action, all three Razorback pairs finished the day 2-0 advancing to Saturday morning’s semifinal round, beginning at 8 a.m.

Senior duo Aurelija Miseviciute and Nanar Airapetian blanked Pamela Duran and Ashlee Vosters from Richmond, 8-0, before making their way to a Flight A semifinal match, 8-2, over Lauren Cash and Dasha Cherkasov of Boston College.

Also in Flight A, Ela Kaluder and Anouk Tigu defeated Richmond’s Erin Clark and Xenia Schneider, 8-4. The pair then made their push into the semifinals, 8-3, against Miami’s (FL) Bianca Eichkorn and Alessa Waibel.

In Flight B of doubles, the fantastic freshman duo of Emily Carbone and Kate Lukomskaya punched their ticket into the semifinals, 9-8(7), over Richmond’s Isabel Arana and Joanna Matuszczyk.

Singles action was no different from doubles as the Razorbacks took complete control of their opponents.

In Flight A the Invitational’s No. 1 overall seed, Miseviciute, won in straight-sets over Winthrop’s Elizaveta Zaytseva, 6-2, 6-1. The nation’s top-ranked singles player will take on No. 87 Ragini Acharya in Saturday’s quarterfinal match. Number 46 Kaluder shot down Anna Milian from Elon, 6-3, 6-3. Kaluder faces No. 84 Beier Ko of Harvard on Saturday.

In singles action of Flight B, Tigu netted an easy, 6-3, 6-0, victory over Penn State’s Monika Mical setting up a quarterfinal match with Richmond’s Matuszczyk.

After two doubles wins on Saturday, Carbone improved to 8-0 overall on the season after her, 6-1, 6-1, victory over Sara Abutovic of Winthrop in Flight C of singles. She will face Boston College’s Katarina Gajic on Saturday.

“Tomorrow will be a bigger test for us all and we aim to be sharp,” Hegarty said.
