Green eligible to play in 2009

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore transfer Broderick Green will be eligible to play for the University of Arkansas in 2009 after the NCAA granted a waiver allowing Green to compete immediately for the Razorbacks.

Green, who transferred from the University of Southern California following last season, received a waiver and will not be required to sit out a season due to the one-year residency requirement assigned to student-athletes who transfer from one Division I-FBS institution to another.

"We are pleased that Broderick will be eligible to compete for the Razorbacks in the upcoming season," Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino said. "Our compliance staff worked closely with Broderick’s family to develop a thorough waiver request based on his personal circumstances. The NCAA carefully considered his waiver and granted Broderick immediate eligibility. We are obviously pleased with their decision and can now move forward knowing that Broderick will have an opportunity to play for us in 2009."

Green, a running back, redshirted at USC in 2007 before playing in six games in 2008 for the Trojans. He rushed the ball 32 times for 168 yards and three touchdowns last season. With the waiver, the Little Rock, Ark., native retains three years of competitive eligibility.

"Waivers of this nature are never easy to resolve and I want to thank the NCAA staff for their efforts in making a determination on Broderick’s case," said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long. "We are excited for Broderick and his family that the NCAA decided in his favor. I also want to commend Senior Associate Jon Fagg and his staff for their efforts on behalf of Broderick and his family. Without their diligence, this outcome would not have been achieved."

"I am excited about the opportunity to play for Arkansas this season," Green said. "I appreciate the support of Coach Petrino, the rest of the coaching staff and the athletic department administration in helping make this outcome a reality. I’m looking forward to the upcoming season and competing for the first time as an Arkansas Razorback."
