Harris earns second academic all-district award

FAYETTEVILLE – Junior Allison Harris of the University of Arkansas Lady Razorback soccer team was named ESPN The Magazine first-team academic all-district VI on Tuesday afternoon.

The honor is Harris’ second in as many years and comes after the Snellville, Ga., native played in just two matches before suffering a season-ending knee injury in practice. A key player for the Lady Razorbacks over the past two seasons, Harris played nearly every minute of every game as a freshman and sophomore as a central defender. She scored the first goal of her Lady Razorback career in 2004 and assisted on a pair of other Arkansas scores and now has five career points.

“At Arkansas we pride ourselves on our student-athletes and quite clearly Allison epitomizes that ideal,” Arkansas head coach Gordon Henderson said. “She has been an outstanding student from day one and an outstanding soccer player as well. She is a pleasure to coach on the field and picks up things very quickly. I believe that if you were to speak with her professors that they would say the same thing. Being a 4.0 student-athlete is a remarkable achievement.”

Harris’ first-team all-district selection makes her the first Lady Razorback in Arkansas’ 20-year history to earn the honor two times in her career. In 2004 she was the fourth Lady Razorback to earn all-district honors.

Maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in honors psychology, Harris is one of 12 members of the district VI first team and now moves on to the national ballot which is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America to determine academic all-Americans. The release date of the all-America team is Tuesday, Nov. 22.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be a sophomore or higher in academic standing and maintain a 3.20 cumulative GPA. Harris was one of many student-athletes nominated for the all-district team which includes the states of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
