Hays, Santos Earn AVCA All-America Accolades

FAYETTEVILLE – For the second-consecutive year and third time in program history, the University of Arkansas volleyball team has collected two All-America honors in one season with Wednesday’s selections of junior Meredith Hays and senior Raymariely Santos by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Hays and Santos have been recognized as Honorable Mention selections for their accomplishments during the 2013 season.

With the program’s latest additions, Hays and Santos become the eighth and ninth players in program history to earn All-America status. The Razorbacks have now collected five All-America accolades under head coach Robert Pulliza. These honors are the first career All-America selections for both Hays and Santos.

The list of Arkansas’ All-Americans also features Jessica Field (1997), Kim Storey (1998), Sara Kincaid (2003), Roberta Tarnauskaite (2003), Denitza Koleva (2006), Jasmine Norton (2009, 2012) and Roslandy Acosta (2012).

Hays was previously honored this season as an AVCA All-South Region and All-Southeastern Conference performer. She currently ranks 49th in the NCAA with 3.94 kills per set and 46th overall with 4.47 points per set. Hays finished her junior campaign with a team-leading nine double-double performances, seven of which came during the conference season.

The Hereford, Texas, native registered double-digit kills in 26 of Arkansas’ 30 matches including 14 matches with 15 or more kills. Hays also turned in five performances with at least 20 kills including a season-best 22 kills on three occasions. She was also a scoring threat from the service line where she tied for second on the team with 26 aces.

During the season, Santos had 16 matches with at least 25 assists including a season-high 42 assists against Creighton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In a show of her all-around play, she posted the first triple-double of her career with 13 kills, 26 assists and 11 digs at Tulsa. She is the fourth player in program history with a triple-double and the first to do so since 2004. Santos was second on the team with eight double-doubles in 2013.

The Ponce, Puerto Rico, native finished her career ranked second in assists (3,661), 12th in digs (933) and 18th in service aces (62). Santos is just the third setter in program history to eclipse 3,000 career assists, joining the short list of former Arkansas standouts Tina Rico and Ning Zhao.
