FAYETTEVILLE—University of Arkansas women’s tennis team head coach Michael Hegarty officially began his 2005 recruiting campaign this week with the signing of Croatia’s Ela Kaluder for the 2005-06 season.
Kaluder becomes the second Croatian signed by Hegarty in the last calendar year behind senior transfer Vlatka Jovanovic. Kaluder and Jovanovic share the same birthplace, Zagreb, Croatia.
“I am excited about the addition of Ela into our program,” said Hegarty. “She has had an outstanding junior career both domestically and internationally. She is also an excellent student and will excel both on and off the court.”
Kaluder was nationally ranked in the top five her entire junior career. She held her nation’s top ranking in the 16 and under division, winning the national indoor and outdoor singles titles that same year.
On the international level, Kaluder was a four-year member of the Croatian national junior tennis team from 2000-2004. Kaluder says she gets her winning spirit from her father, Zdenko, who was a three-time junior tennis champion in the former Yugoslavia.
“Ela and Rachel Wilhelm give us an excellent blend of experience and youth next season,” Hegarty said.
Texas tennis star Rachel Wilhelm was Hegarty’s first signee for the 2005-06 campaign. As a high school freshman, she was ranked as high as 13th in the Lone Star state and 198th nationally.
