Henry Looks To Continue Strong Play Thursday Night

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – It’s been almost six months since Hunter Henry heard his name called at the 2016 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. Henry was coming off a John Mackey Award-winning season with the Razorbacks, being named an All-American and leading all FBS tight ends with 739 receiving yards on 51 receptions.

Now it seems the Chargers’ pick is paying off. Since stepping into the starting role in Week 2 after long-time Charger and future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates suffered a hamstring injury, Henry has proven week after week why he was the best tight end in college football and could become one of the top tight ends in the NFL.

Just five games into his rookie season, Henry has started the last four games for the Chargers and has filled in nicely as one of quarterback Phillip Rivers’ favorite targets. Since his first start in Week 2 against the Jaguars, Henry has caught 12 passes for 207 yards with a touchdown in each of his last two games.

Last week against the Raiders, Henry turned in his best game of the year when he caught three passes for a season high 74 yards and one touchdown, including a long 59-yard reception, the third-longest by a tight end this season.

Henry’s 59-yard Reception vs. Oakland

Henry has come up big on his receptions when given the opportunity. Of his 13 catches, 11 have gone for first downs, leading all tight ends with an 84.6 percent clip, which also ranks fourth overall among all NFL players with 10+ catches.

Henry ranks fifth among NFL tight ends in touchdowns (2), seventh in yards per catch (17.5), 10th in yards (227) and tied for 11th in first down receptions (11). His 17.5 yards per catch leads all tight ends with 10+ receptions.

Along with Martellus Bennett of the New England Patriots, Henry is one of two tight ends with multiple touchdown grabs, at least four receptions of 20+ yards and a 40-yard catch.
